Context and process
Geofences let organisations define the boundaries of a physical location and automatically trigger actions when a worker enters or exits. The challenge was designing two very different experiences that serve the same system: an admin-facing creator on web, and a field-facing check-in on mobile.

Two main users, two integrated features
The project started by mapping two distinct use cases: managers setting up geofences on web, and field workers checking in on mobile. Understanding what each user needed, and when, shaped every design decision that followed.
Designing for the field workers
The mobile check-in had to work fast, with minimal cognitive load, under real-world conditions. Interviews and workflow mapping with field workers defined what frictionless actually meant in a safety context, where hesitation has consequences.
Web complexity, mobile simplicity
The web creator required a flexible tool for drawing and configuring location boundaries. The mobile experience stripped everything back to a single moment: arriving at a location and confirming it instantly.
Design question
How can we make sure users with disabled location access are able to experience the quick check-in feature?
By intentionally promoting the feature and educating the user how to turn on location settings.

Key decisions

A check-in that comes to you
Rather than asking field workers to navigate to a check-in screen, the home screen surfaces a contextual widget the moment a user enters a geofence.

Making map interaction approachable on web
Drawing geofences on a map carries a risk of feeling technical or intimidating for non-technical admins. The web creator was designed around familiar gestures so managers could set up and configure boundaries without needing guidance.

Stripping the mobile check-in to its core
The mobile experience had one job: get the worker checked in the moment they arrive, with as little friction as possible. That meant removing every step that wasn't essential.
