Guided installation tools for satellite technicians

Context

Viasat Tech Tools is the all-in-one app that walks satellite technicians through an installation, handles their work orders and acknowledges the job in the field. It exists to replace the handful of separate apps a technician used to juggle on site.

The problem

These are expert users in conditions that punish a careless interface: outdoors, usually under time pressure, one hand on the device and one eye on the dish. Pointing and Peaking asks a technician to adjust azimuth and elevation off audio and on-screen feedback at the same time, so a confusing screen is not an irritation, it costs them the alignment.

My role

I came in as an outside contributor on a large product that already existed, which meant the job was to add value fast inside constraints I did not set. I researched how technicians actually used these tools on a job rather than how the flows were drawn, then went after friction in what was already there instead of proposing new features.

Outcome

The value of the work was less about adding functionality and more about helping technicians complete existing tasks with fewer moments of uncertainty avoiding multiple trips to the customer's site. By improving an established product without disrupting its underlying workflows, the changes improved efficiency of work and precision.
